National Retirement Planning Week, designed to coincide with Financial Literacy Month, is scheduled for April 12 to April 15, as various organizations schedule outreach efforts designed to raise public awareness to the need to comprehensively plan for retirement.

Among the sponsors of National Retirement Planning Week are the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI), Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, American Council of Life Insurers and Americans for a Secure Retirement – all members of the National Retirement Planning Coalition, which organizes the annual event.

“A crisis in retirement readiness exists today, as Americans – still reeling from the effects of the recession – dramatically underestimate the income needed to support their envisioned retirement lifestyles,” said IRI CEO and President Cathy Weatherford. The IRI is a nonprofit organization providing information and resources on annuities, insured retirement strategies and retirement planning.

Weatherford blamed the crisis on “shattered investor confidence, diminished savings, longer life spans and the declining role of Social Security and pensions.”

During the week, the IRI intends to “help jumpstart the retirement planning process” by providing tips and tools to streamline people’s efforts, she added.

Some outreach efforts will focus on National Retirement Planning Week themes. Those themes include “The New Retirement Reality,” April 12; “Top 10 Ways to Prepare for Retirement,” April 13; “Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits,” April 14; and “Retirement Savings Mechanisms for Tax-Preferred Status,” April 15.
